Allan Falconer, Peggy J. Harwood, Frank L. Scarpace and Bernard “Barney” Schur have been named the 2008 ASPRS Fellow Award winners. The ASPRS designation of Fellow is conferred on active Society members who have performed exceptional service in advancing the science and use of the mapping sciences (photogrammetry, remote sensing, surveying, geographic information systems, and related disciplines). The designation of Fellow is awarded for pro¬fessional excellence and for service to the Society. 2008 ESRI Homeland Security GIS Summit Provides Forum to Discuss Challenges and Discover Solutions

www.esri.com/hssummit

Leading government officials and geographic information system (GIS) experts from across the country will be attending the 2008 ESRI Homeland Security GIS Summit to discuss the latest developments in protecting the homeland. Representatives from local, state, and federal agencies, as well as utilities, high-technology companies, and other businesses are encouraged to attend the largest geospatial conference of its kind. The fourth annual conference will take place October 20–23 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Attendees will learn how GIS technology provides a proven framework with customized solutions for their specific missions. They will see firsthand how GIS improves public protection and business continuity. Workshops and breakout sessions give an opportunity to discover projects and applications successfully deployed today.

“We’re in a time of tremendous challenges, and GIS professionals are leading the way in transforming how agencies are successfully responding to fluid conditions,” says Russ Johnson, public safety solutions manager, ESRI. “Our sole purpose is to enable users with real solutions. We want to help them overcome their unique challenges and achieve greater success, so we’ve created a unique event tailored to this industry based on user feedback and market conditions. We’ve brought colleagues, technical experts, solution providers, and guest speakers together for a comprehensive forum to learn and share.”

Distinguished keynote speaker Leesa Berens Morrison, director of Homeland Security, Arizona, will discuss homeland security issues that border states face today.

2008 Proves a Strong Year for Cityworks

www.azteca.com

Azteca Systems, Inc. announced that the company experienced another year of strong, stable growth through 2008. Worldwide, forty-five new customers adopted Cityworks to manage assets, infrastructure, and property. In addition, a significant share of existing customers further deployed Cityworks into new areas of their organization.

Cityworks’ powerful, yet easy-to-use management tools provide organizations the ability to manage and maintain assets, track customer issues, and improve workflow.  Built on ESRI’s ArcGIS software, Cityworks is the only software in its industry that fully takes advantage of GIS and spatial data to manage assets, giving agencies the ability to track critical data through maps and provide a complete solution for infrastructure needs.  Customers continue to express their satisfaction with Cityworks whether they are implementing for the first time, expanding to new departments and divisions, or have been using the GIS-centric application for years.

“From my involvement with Azteca and Cityworks throughout the planning and implementation process, I believe that the only thing better than Azteca’s marketing, project management, and technical coordination is the Cityworks software itself!” commented Bill Hodge, GIS Division Manager for the City of Midland, Texas. “Our first-round implementation within Transportation and Utilities is the beginning of a true enterprise-use of the Cityworks asset management software within the City. I have already started planning an expansion of my GIS capability to match the anticipated increase in Cityworks usage, as other departments start to see the productivity increase that can be realized through this great product.”

2009 ESRI Geospatial Technology Grants Available for U.S. 4-H Clubs
The Deadline to Apply Is December 1, 2008

www.esri.com/4-H

The 2009 ESRI geographic information system (GIS) technology grants for the U.S. 4-H Youth Development Program are open for application until December 1, 2008. GIS greatly improves the ability of educators, students, and their institutions to answer personal and community questions with local and global implications. With its annual grant program, ESRI has awarded 4-H clubs in more than 600 counties with ArcView and ArcPad software and Virtual Campus training. Three different types of grants are offered: Getting Started with GIS and GPS; Introduction to GIS for 4-H; and Intermediate GIS for 4-H.

For 2009, ESRI has again joined with American Forests, a nonprofit citizens’ conservation group, to provide 4-H clubs with a grant opportunity. Clubs that have successfully fulfilled the requirements of the Introduction to GIS for 4-H grant can acquire advanced functionality for their community service projects through the Intermediate GIS for 4-H grant. ESRI will equip these clubs with Youth Club Licenses for ArcGIS 3D Analyst or ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst extensions. American Forests will provide clubs that are working on a forestry project with the CITYgreen extension to ArcGIS.

“This grant program is an excellent way for 4-H clubs in the United States to access the latest geospatial technology,” said Esther Worker, youth and community mapping manager, ESRI. “GIS will help further the 4-H mission of integrating science, engineering, and technology into youth programs as well as provide an excellent way for youth to investigate and understand their communities and their world. We encourage 4-H clubs to apply for this opportunity to advance their projects in a creative and telling way.”
