The Future of Geospatial Data Demands: A New Approach to Management

Collaborative projects face challenges like data governance risks and format compatibility. Technical issues include scaling clusters for parallel processing, configuring spatial relational databases, and cleaning error-prone data, which consumes 80–90% of data scientists' time.

A unified, multimodal cloud-native database is proposed to handle geospatial and other data types efficiently, supporting billions of geometries, reducing egress, and enabling faster queries. Serverless advances further enhance performance, cost-efficiency, and data quality, simplifying overlays for comprehensive insights.

Bridgecross Wins NOAA National Geodetic Survey and Marine Chart Division IT Support Contracts

This woman-owned, service-disabled veteran-owned, small business, and emerging provider of elite contingency workforce for the Department of Defense, U.S. Federal Government Agencies, and corporate clients, was awarded a pair of tasks.

BridgeCross LLC, a woman–owned, service–disabled veteran–owned small business, has secured two federal contracts with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The first is a five–year, $4,813,144.95 award to provide Information Technology Mission Support Services to NOAA's National Geodetic Survey, issued as an 8(a) sole–source award with a single bidder.

The second is a three–year, $4,238,629.00 contract to deliver Geographic Information System software solutions and development services to NOAA's Marine Chart Division. Awarded through the GSA MAS vehicle under a total small business set–aside, it drew two bidders.

SkyFi Launches Rowan AI Navigator for Satellite Imagery and Geospatial Analytics

Rowan interprets a customer's objective, identifies relevant data sources, and recommends analytics without requiring knowledge of sensors or GIS workflows. It can compare historical and current imagery, check archive coverage, forecast cloud cover for optical tasking, and surface pricing before an order is placed — all within the same conversation.

“Expertise was the one [barrier] that kept most teams out, and that is the barrier Rowan is built to remove,” said CEO Luke Fischer. Rowan is free to use, with SkyFi Pro subscribers receiving expanded access to its full capabilities.

Who Gets to Draw the Map?

For a week and a half this summer, 10 people were doing something most of us would never notice. They were drawing buildings.

Summary

The Georgian [the country, not the U.S. state] OpenStreetMap community collaborated online using 2025 aerial imagery from the National Agency of Public Registry to update mapping data in Ambrolauri. Volunteers systematically divided the territory to trace buildings, inspect roads, and add addresses without overwriting each other's work. This effort refined roughly 18,000 buildings and added 10,000 addresses.

Unlike commercial mapping products managed by tech giants or governments, OpenStreetMap operates as an open, user-edited database. The project highlights how volunteer effort, critical judgment, and cross-referencing multiple sources produce accurate geographical information. By turning public data into open-access mapping, the initiative benefits hiking and navigation applications, demonstrating how decentralized, collaborative human effort continues to play a essential role in digital cartography.

National Security Requires Securing Modern AI Workloads

Solutions of choice need to address runtime-relevant exposure, reduce CVE counts, and allow authorizing officials to distinguish noise from mission impact.

AI-driven coding tools are accelerating military mission capabilities but also expanding software supply chain vulnerabilities within the Department of Defense, according to a new analysis. Because most mission systems rely on open-source Linux distributions with large software baselines, they often contain known and unknown CVEs — a problem AI tools worsen by pulling from non-hardened, indiscriminately updated dependencies. The 2025 CVE list averaged 132 new vulnerabilities daily, up 20% year over year.

Poor vulnerability management risks ATO restrictions, deployment delays, and engineers diverted from mission work to patching. The recommended fix: near–zero CVE hardened images, removing unused components rather than patching them, paired with SBOMs, RBOMs, and machine–readable risk attestations that give commanders real–time, mission–relevant visibility into containerized AI systems.

Google Buys Data From Bankrupt Spirit Airlines for AI Training

The data from the defunct airline is not supposed to include any customer data or personally identifiable information.

Google has paid $10 million in a bankruptcy auction to acquire a large trove of data from defunct Spirit Airlines, according to a Bloomberg Law report. The purchase includes 100 million emails, 500 million messages, and Microsoft Teams data, along with records covering revenue, flight operations, marketing, personnel, and project management.

Also included are 30 million lines of program code, development data, software models and algorithms, plus pricing information from 7.2 billion competing flights and roughly 7.5 billion passenger transactions.

Google says no personal data will be part of the deal — a third party will review the material and strip out anything that could identify individuals. The company plans to use the remaining data to improve its products and AI models.

Artificial Intelligence and Public Power

While comparing AI to electricity may overstate things, AI is undeniably driving massive infrastructure investment and reshaping power supply planning, rate design, and system maintenance for utilities. Drones Are the Next Big Security Challenge for Critical Infrastructure

A consumer drone can cross two miles into restricted airspace, complete a reconnaissance run, and exit in under three minutes without detection.

Traditional perimeter security — cameras, sensors, access control — offers no visibility above ground level, creating a critical airspace gap. Many assume the FAA's Remote ID framework closes that gap, but only about 20% of drone flights currently comply, meaning bad actors can simply avoid broadcasting their presence.

Passive radio frequency detection offers a solution by identifying a drone–controller link regardless of Remote ID compliance. However, detection alone is not enough — understanding the broader context behind drone activity is what security teams truly need.
