What UAV Pilots Need to Know About GIS Deliverables

As veterans in the UAV industry will know, we are long past the point where being able to simply fly your drone is enough to sustain a successful business in today’s world.

Summary

Understanding Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is crucial for UAV pilots, especially as the industry evolves and competition increases. While not required to be GIS experts, pilots should have a basic knowledge of GIS to provide valuable deliverables to clients.

This includes understanding georeferencing, file formats, and metadata, ensuring data accuracy and integration into existing GIS workflows.

While GIS might feel like a separate world from flying drones, the two are becoming increasingly connected, and that connection is only going to strengthen as more industries adopt geospatial tools. For pilots, having a foundational understanding of GIS isn't about replacing analysts or diving deep into software. It's about being able to provide data that integrates smoothly into the workflows your clients already use, and to understand enough of their expectations to deliver value beyond the flight itself.

2026 Esri International User Conference Recap

Recap of the 2026 Esri International User Conference, including GIS Leadership Summit highlights, Public Works SIG updates, ArcGIS Solutions enhancements, SAG winners, and emerging technologies.

Summary

The 46th Esri International User Conference, held July 13–17, 2026, in San Diego, drew over 15,000 attendees to the UC Plenary, themed “GIS – Creating a More Intelligent World.” The week opened with the GIS Leadership Summit, its largest ever with 500-plus attendees from 57 industries and 28 countries. Special Achievement in GIS Awards recognized Houston Public Works, Austin's GIS Group, the Government of Jamaica, and NOAA's National Water Center, among others.

Public Works sessions covered ArcGIS Solutions updates, including expanded Road Closures support for Google Maps and Waze, plus a new Waste Collection Solver and an eBook on enterprise GIS strategy. A drone mapping demonstration from ES2 and Wingtra mapped 40 acres in about 15 minutes using True Ortho and Gaussian Splats data collection.

5 Steps to Prepare for a Migration From Esri to CARTO

Heathrow Launches Real-Time Mapping Platform to Boost Airport Operations

Heathrow Airport has introduced a new geospatial mapping and data platform aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening resilience across its facilities.

Summary

Heathrow Airport has launched Heathrow Explorer, a GIS platform developed by Esri UK that consolidates data on more than 500,000 assets into interactive maps and dashboards.

Part of Heathrow’s digital transformation and Asset Management and Compliance Programme, the system will initially support up to 3,000 staff across engineering, operations, fire services, property and retail, plus third-party airline users, replacing legacy software with almost 300 information layers.

Gavin Payne of Heathrow called location intelligence a core capability for asset management and operational goals, while Esri UK’s Pete Wilkinson said the airport is demonstrating next-generation geospatial systems. Early applications cover winter operations and fire service response; future tools will support expansion plans and indoor navigation for passengers and staff.

Microsoft Unveils AI Security Tools It Says Outperform Competing Platforms

Energy Secretary Secures Grid Across 17 States Amid Period of Hot Weather
