Ocean City Eyes Updated Aerial Snapshot Of Resort
In an attempt to obtain a new perspective on all of Ocean City, City[Maryland] Council members unanimously agreed on Tuesday night to look into obtaining new aerial photography that would significantly assist in the planning and zoning of future operations in the town. Although $45,000 was already approved in the 2007 fiscal year budget for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that includes pictometry and terrain modeling, city officials instead recommended the funds go toward obtaining new aerial photography considering that all the old photography will be four years old this spring.
“What it would allow us to do is capture all the development that has occurred in the town over the last few years,” City Manager Dennis Dare said. “Our mapping predates most of this development and it would allow us to then to update it.”
Ocean City plans on using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), which is a common form of GIS used for a variety of reasons. The town plans to use their DEM to replace maps created in 1986 that are still referenced today. These new maps would include a three-dimensional relief map, new topography and contour lines (both digital and paper) and new color imagery.
