Ben Cook Regains World Record for Text Messaging

The American record holder for text messaging, 18-year-old Ben Cook, regained his title as World's Fastest Text Messager by shattering the world record by more than half a second. Cook, who set the new record during a contest celebrating Cricket's launch in Portland, regained his title just one month after he lost it to a Singaporean teenager.

Cook regained his title December 19 by taking just 41.00 seconds to type the Guinness Book of World Records' standardized message“The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.” The previous record of 41.52 seconds was set by 16-year-old Ang Chuang Yang on November 12. Cook has set the world record for fastest text messaging three times.

Cal State will soon demand technological literacy

California State Universities have writing and English language proficiency tests, and soon they will have a technological literacy test. Inside Higher Ed reports that many students, despite their comfort with all things Internet and iPod, may not have the necessary skills to operate successfully in the ever-changing information landscape. The California State University, in conjunction with Educational Testing Service, is putting the final stages on a technological literacy test that gauges students' tech competency. Students would have to pass that test in order to move on to higher-level courses.

“People are good at learning technologies, but they are not so good at applying them,” said Barbara O'Connor, a professor of communications at California State University at Sacramento.

Cisco warns of router software flaws

Flaws in Cisco IOS could mean a denial-of-service attack, the network hardware maker says in three security advisories. The vulnerabilities lie in Cisco's Internetwork Operating System and could be exploited to crash or remotely run malicious code on devices that run the software, the San Jose, Calif., networking giant warned Wednesday in security advisories. IOS runs on Cisco's routers and switches, which make up a large portion of the Internet's infrastructure.
