N.V. Elmar successfully upgrades to the latest version of Tensing Mobile GIS

Tensing announced that it has successfully upgraded N.V. Elmar, sole electric distributor on the island of Aruba, to the latest version of Tensing Mobile GIS. Tensing Mobile GIS is a platform-independent product that runs on any Windows-driven device utilizing the Microsoft .NET Framework or .NET Compact Framework. In addition to a faster data extractor, the latest version of Tensing Mobile GIS adds a gazetteer, tracing functions, and saved views to a multitude of existing features.

According to Juni Figaroa, Supervisor-Engineer of Elmar’s GIS Data Warehouse Department, “we [Elmar] have been using Tensing Mobile GIS for a number of years and are quite happy with the user friendly interface and functionalities. With Tensing Mobile GIS our supervisors have access to our corporate GIS and they can update data in the field. The additional features of the upgrade will further improve our service to customers.” Mr. Figaroa oversees all data gathering in the field for Elmar.

NACo endorses GIS certification

The National Association of Counties endorsed a certification program for geographic information systems (GIS) specialists. The association’s GIS Committee issued a letter of support last month for the GIS Certification Institute’s certification program. The institute issues a GIS Professional certification to people who meet minimum standards for education, professional experience and contribution to the profession.

The association’s letter represents a general endorsement of the institute’s certification process, said Scott Grams, executive director of the institute.

Navico Agrees to Buy Brunswick New Technologies' Marine Electronics

Navico International Ltd. agreed to acquire the marine electronics business of Brunswick New Technologies, a unit of Brunswick Corporation). Subject to regulatory approvals, this transaction, which is expected to close during March 2007, will create the world's largest supplier of marine electronics for recreational boats. Included in the agreement are the three brands MX Marine, Navman marine and Northstar. The combined businesses had revenues of USD 50 million in 2006 with primary operating facilities in New Zealand, the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

“We are truly excited to add these three highly-regarded brands to the Navico range, thus forming the clear global leader in marine electronics for recreational boats with an estimated market share of 25 percent. MX Marine, Navman marine and Northstar will further strengthen Navico's house of brands strategy which includes already the renowned B&G, Eagle, Lowrance and Simrad brand names. The new companies will expand Navico's commitment to providing performance, safety and enjoyment on the water,” said Jens-Thomas Pietralla, President and CEO of Navico.

MX Marine has a 30-year heritage in providing high precision navigation systems for commercial and government vessels.

Norwegian Air Traffic Control Services Co Awards Aeronautical Charting System contract to ESRI Affiliates

A consortium led by ESRI business partner CGx AERO in SYS of France and including ENAC (France) and Geodata (Norway) has been awarded an international tender launched by Avinor AS for its Procedures for Air Navigation, Design and Aeronautical (PANDA) charting system.

Avinor is a state-owned limited company that is responsible for air traffic control services in Norway. The company owns and operates 46 airports throughout the country including 14 that are in association with the armed forces.

PANDA will be Avinor’s primary system for creating aeronautical charts; designing flight procedures (PANS-OPS); and conducting geospatial analyses, calculations, and transformations related to air navigation services.

ESRI’s ArcGIS software implementation includes ArcGIS Desktop and the ArcGIS 3D Analyst and Spatial Analyst extensions as well as ArcGIS Server. In addition, Avinor selected ESRI’s Production Line Tool Set (PLTS) for ArcGIS—Aeronautical Solution for the management of database–driven charting products compliant with Avinor standards and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 4 standards. Aeronautical Solution will be used for chart generation, chart updates, and workflow management throughout the enterprise. Comments Brian Cross, manager of ESRI’s aeronautical solutions, “PLTS for ArcGIS—Aeronautical Solution will provide Avinor with the ability to make geographic information system (GIS)-based, database-driven Annex 4-compliant charts. By centralizing aeronautical information management, the software’s true database-driven updating capabilities will help streamline the chart updating process, and its Web-based workflow management application will provide end-to-end enterprise management of the system.”
