Darlington County gears up for 2010 U.S. Census

www.darcosc.com/

Every decade we count our citizens. As our citizens embrace technology, so do the Census takers. Even though the 2010 U.S. Census three years away preparations for it are under way in Darlington County. In Darlington County, South Carolina they missed more than 48,000 South Carolinians in the 2000 Census -- that’s according to The Office of Research and Statistics for the S.C. Budget and Control Board.

In Darlington County, there was only a 54 percent response rate to the 2000 Census.Bobby Bowers, research director for the board said the reason is because most people, when they get the packets in the mail, don’t know the importance of replying. In many cases, people either put them in the trash or set them aside and forget about them.

“Not responding to the Census is illegal,” Bowers said. “Forty-seven percent of Darlington County residents broke the federal law by not filing.”

Although the Feds don’ go around arresting us for not responding, each year, states and counties receive an allotment of money for each person identified on the Census. Because about 539 people in Darlington County didn’t respond, the county lost $270,000 for this decade plus funds the state, cities and towns lost out on. Bowers said the state lost about $115 million in 2004 alone.

Bowers is making every effor to get the word out early. Perhaps those in the GIS community that will profit from Census software will get out and help the “Bowers” of the world
