3Dconnexion Navigation Devices Now Supported by Microsoft's Live Search Maps Offering

www.3dconnexion.com

3Dconnexion, a Logitech company, announced its line of 3D navigation devices are now supported by the Microsoft Virtual Earth platform, enabling people to fly through the Live Search Maps 3D world in a manner not previously possible with a mouse and keyboard alone. With 3Dconnexion's SpaceNavigator™ device, geo-browsing enthusiasts can take advantage of the same powerful navigation control popular with 3D artists and computer-aided design (CAD) professionals.

3Dconnexion's devices significantly enhance the Live Search Maps experience. When navigating 3D worlds with a mouse and keyboard alone, people must repeatedly stop to switch tools or toggle keyboard shortcuts to change directions. Using a 3Dconnexion device, people can fly seamlessly through the visually rich 3D world of Live Search Maps to learn, discover and explore by gently manipulating a controller cap. Within 3D mode in Live Search Maps, an online local search and mapping Web site powered by the Virtual Earth platform, customers can use a 3Dconnexion device to navigate through immersive 3D environments within a browser interface.

“The ease with which people can now navigate in Live Search Maps using a 3Dconnexion device is truly exceptional, and on top of that, it makes for an engaging 3D exploration experience,” said Aric Weiker, director of product management for the Virtual Earth platform at Microsoft Corp. “3Dconnexion's devices dramatically change how our customers interact with both Virtual Earth and Live Search Maps.”

“The Live Search Maps high-quality graphics, coupled with impressive mapping functionality, provide an immersive visual experience,” said Rory Dooley, president of 3Dconnexion. “Our navigation devices further enhance the experience by connecting people to the content more powerfully, enhancing understanding and encouraging exploration.”

The SpaceNavigator device is a companion to the mouse and is held in the alternate hand. Users apply very slight movements to the device's controller cap to simultaneously pan, zoom and rotate 3D objects. The entire 3Dconnexion product line is supported by more than 100 of today's most popular 3D applications, including Adobe® Acrobat 3D, Adobe Photoshop® CS3 Extended and all of the top-tier 3D CAD applications.

4-H Club Gets ESRI GIS Grant

www.esri.com

ESRI expanded its 4-H Club geographic information system grant program for 2007. The grants include GIS software, training, and supplemental materials. The 2007 initiative offers grants for both introductory- and intermediate-level GIS programs. The introductory level supports 4-H Clubs new to GIS and GPS technology. The intermediate level is for clubs that have successfully applied for and received software under a previous 4-H GIS grant from ESRI and have completed the requirements of submitting a Community Atlas project, participating in a GIS Day event, and completing a community service project.

American Forests, the nation's oldest nonprofit citizens' conservation organization, is joining with ESRI on the 4-H grants by providing its CITYgreen extension for ArcView for intermediate applicants doing tree inventories as part of their community service project. Additional information and applications can be found at www.esri.com/industries/k-12/4-h/grants.html The grant program is one aspect of a multifaceted initiative currently being developed by ESRI in cooperation with National 4-H Headquarters that will help its members expand their current GIS programs. The programs include the National 4-H GIS/GPS Technology Integration Team and the National 4-H GIS/GPS Technology Program.

AAG Conference to Feature Jared Diamond and Rebecca Solnit

www.aag.org

Four critically acclaimed authors, Jared Diamond, Rebecca Solnit, Barry Lopez, and Milton Viorst, will address special sessions of the 2007 AAG (Association of American Geographers) Annual Meeting held April 17-21 in San Francisco (Hilton Hotel, 333 O’Farrell St.).

Jared Diamond, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel, will address the opening session on Tuesday, April 17 at 6 p.m. In his most recent book, Collapse, Diamond examines how environmental issues impacted the rise and fall of ancient civilizations and discusses how similar issues may impact the modern world.

“The Language of Landscape,” a special session on Friday, April 20, will feature noted authors Rebecca Solnit and Barry Lopez, beginning at 6 p.m. Solnit, a Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Humanities fellow, wrote the best-selling Wanderlust: A History of Walking.

Lopez, a National Book Award honoree, often writes about the intricate relationships between culture and natural landscapes. His books include the recent Home Ground: Language for an American Landscape, in which 45 poets and nature writers create more than 850 original definitions for geographic and landscape terms.

Former New Yorker Middle East correspondent Milton Viorst will discuss “Iraq and the Middle East” on Wednesday, April 18. Each author will be available for questions following their presentations.

Accurately Position ArcGIS Maps in AutoCAD

www.esri.com/

With the new version of ESRI’s ArcGIS for AutoCAD software, CAD users are provided a simplified means of storing coordinate system definitions inside AutoCAD drawings, eliminating the complexities of maintaining external companion files. The new version of ArcGIS for AutoCAD now also supports AutoCAD 2008.

With ArcGIS for AutoCAD, CAD users can define the coordinate system they are using within AutoCAD. When they connect to an ArcGIS Server map service in a different coordinate system, the map is automatically projected on the fly to display in the proper AutoCAD location. This greatly increases the usefulness of the map service, as users can work in their chosen coordinate system without transforming their CAD drawings or converting the geographic information system (GIS) data.

The new version of ArcGIS for AutoCAD includes tools to list, assign, export, and remove coordinate system definitions from the AutoCAD drawing. Beginning with ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 3, ArcGIS will continue to recognize the companion file to define the coordinate system of AutoCAD drawings, but it will also recognize AutoCAD drawings that have implemented the new coordinate system definition with ArcGIS for AutoCAD. Other geospatial industry software, such as Safe Software's FME extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) tools, will also recognize this internally stored coordinate system definition.
