Enabling geolocation field in your SharePoint 2013 list using an app
by yaroslav pentsarskyy
In SharePoint 2013 there is a cool little feature you probably don’t know about, the geolocation field that can be added to lists. In fact, I checked the Office 365 developer site running on SharePoint 2013, and this functionality is also available.Below, you see a screenshot of a list view
In here we have a custom list with 2 fields, one of which is a geo location type field.
First things first, in order to have this functionality available you need to have :
-Sql Server 2008 R2 SP1 Feature Pack
-SQL Server 2012 Feature Pack
… as this feature relies on SQL ability to store geo locaiton data. continued…

Esri and Geofeedia Expand Social Media with Location Analytics
Companies to Extend the ArcGIS Platform with Real-Time Data
Esri and Geofeedia announced plans to extend the ArcGIS platform with Geofeedia’s innovative social media tools. Public safety professionals will be able to take advantage of these capabilities to accurately integrate, monitor, analyze, and visualize live emergency data as events unfold. Deploying assets and personnel, understanding of events on the ground, adjusting response on the fly, and post-event monitoring are all improved using social media combined with location analytics.
"Geofeedia is an innovator in location-based social media," says Ryan Lanclos, emergency management manager, Esri. "Both organizations recognized that understanding location provides context and value to social media. Ultimately, this improves meeting mission demands.”
“Esri is an industry leader and provides the ideal enterprise platform to visualize and analyze real-time social media feeds from Geofeedia,” says Phil Harris, CEO of Geofeedia. “Location-based social media data layers from Geofeedia combined with Esri’s technology and vast repository of other layers give public safety officials the best combination of real-time intelligence for response efforts.”
The real-time data integration, searching and streaming will work across multiple social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, YouTube, and Picasa. Geo-located tweets, photos, and videos can be viewed within the context of digital imagery, street networks, topography, and community base maps. The social data can be mashed up with other information such as public safety assets, city infrastructure, utility networks, hazardous materials, demographic data, and more. Additional dynamic data including weather, automated vehicle location, GPS, and traffic video camera feeds can be combined with social and map data. In addition, people can perform historical social media analysis to identify trends and patterns.
In addition to public safety, professionals in government, national security, healthcare, and insurance will be able to extend the ArcGIS platform by adding intelligence about social conversations. This includes social media sentiment, location, population profile, and temporal and spatial trend analysis. Adding intelligence improves security, crisis response and business continuity, event monitoring, marketing, compliance, and more.
The integration was demonstrated at the Esri Partner Conference in Palm Springs, California March 23–26. Esri and Geofeedia will release more details at the Esri User Conference in July.

Esri Announces ArcGIS Online Hosting of ClearTerra Enhanced Documents
Esri announces that its partner ClearTerra, of Hanover, Maryland, has updated its LocateXT software for use with ArcGIS Online. LocateXT transforms static documents and files with geo-coordinates into shareable spatial data layers that can now be hosted in Esri's cloud-based ArcGIS Online.
"The ability of LocateXT software to scan military communiqués such as e?mails, messages, briefings, and reports; extract geographic coordinates from them; and then post the data contained in the communiqués to ArcGIS Online is a powerful tool for the armed forces," said Jeff Peters, Esri's director of national government. "It facilitates everything from ISR [intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance] operations to field maneuvers."
The LocateXT/ArcGIS Online workflow provides nearly instantaneous data sharing, collaboration, and dissemination within a unit or organization. Because the spatial layers are hosted in ArcGIS Online, any user with a web browser and the appropriate permission can view a web map incorporating the newly created spatial data. For users needing to perform geospatial analysis and processing, the spatial data can be directly accessed by the powerful ArcGIS for Desktop software. ArcGIS Online technology is also available on-premises as Portal for ArcGIS.
"This capability not only addresses the time-consuming manual process of finding and plotting geo-coordinates, but brings it into the social networking era by immediately sharing with others. All [users] need is an organizational ArcGIS Online subscription and LocateXT software," said Jeff Wilson, vice president of Sales for ClearTerra.
"We even have a workflow where e?mail or web pages can be dragged and dropped into LocateXT and pushed straight to the GIS cloud," said Wilson. "This is a huge capability for fast-moving situations or mining open-source data."

Esri Announces the ArcGIS Online Specialty for Esri Partners
ArcGIS users can now easily identify Esri partners with skills and experience in delivering ArcGIS Online apps and services thanks to the new ArcGIS Online Specialty. The ArcGIS Online Specialty designates partners in the Esri Partner Network that have developed a proven set of value-added services and solutions that help users implement and optimize ArcGIS Online in their organizations.
With the release of ArcGIS 10.2, thousands of ArcGIS for Desktop users now have access to complimentary ArcGIS Online organizational subscriptions. The ArcGIS Online Specialty initiative is designed to help users quickly identify local partners in their community who can help them with everything from getting started with ArcGIS Online to developing and producing custom applications that take full advantage of web GIS.
"ArcGIS Online is transforming the way organizations manage and share their spatial data with internal stakeholders and external customers," said Esri president Jack Dangermond. "The ArcGIS Online Specialty allows us to recognize and collaborate with our partners that have embraced ArcGIS Online and are helping users succeed."
Five early-adopter partners have obtained the ArcGIS Online Specialty designation for offering their expertise, apps, and services to the user community:
Organizations such as the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) are already realizing the benefits of the ArcGIS Online Specialty. With the help of Esri partner GEO-Jobe, MNPS was able to spatially enable its data warehouse to better understand its data. "With ArcGIS Online, we're able to securely expose spatially enabled warehouse data to decision makers in a very user-friendly way," said Ryan Latimer, GIS lead for MNPS. "In addition to being able to view the data, they can actually perform spatial analysis to identify patterns and areas of positive and negative outcomes. Meaningful maps can then be securely shared with other users and accessed in a variety of ways to support the decision-making process."

Esri Applications Available from ArcGIS Online, Apple App Store, and Google Play
Esri has created two new applications to monitor daily operations and simplify field data collection. Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS provides a common operating picture and allows decision makers to monitor, track, and report on daily operations. Collector for ArcGIS allows users to capture and report spatial and/or tabular information directly from their iPhone or Android smartphone in the field.
The Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS uses interactive maps and data in the form of charts, gauges, and other performance indicators that update automatically as underlying data changes. Dashboard views can be shared and used by others within an organization. The Operations Dashboard application runs on Windows desktops and Intel-based Windows tablets and is available at ArcGIS Online.
Subscribers to ArcGIS Online can install the Operations Dashboard via a ClickOnce deployment without the need for administrator rights. Powered by ArcGIS Runtime SDK for WPF, the Operations Dashboard can be extended with new widgets, map tools, and feature actions.
The Collector for ArcGIS application simplifies data collection in the field. Data can be recorded using GPS or by tapping on the map. The Collector app provides the ability to plan routes, generate directions, capture photos and video, and seamlessly integrate information back into an organization's GIS. The app can also be configured for use with various tools to help tailor data collection workflows to users' specific needs.
