U.S. Spies Want to Find Terrorists in “World of Warcraft”

The nation’s intelligence community launches a program to see if it can detect terrorists playing in virtual worlds and games like Second Life and World of Warcraft. The project hopes to study what normal people do in online games in order to later detect people who want to kill for politics, not fun.

Ubuntu Release Brings Power and Polish to the Linux Desktop

The new version of Ubuntu Linux, code-named “Hardy Heron,” was released Thursday. Included are a number of small improvements to installation, hardware set-up and performance -- all of which add up to one of the most easy to use desktop environments available for the free software operating system.

… The most interesting new feature for those looking to switch from Windows is Wubi, a single-click Ubuntu installer for Windows. Wubi neatly eliminates installation hassles like disk partitioning and other details and allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu (or any Linux variant) just like any other Windows application.

Web Mashups Made Easy

The Web, for all its usefulness, is still a fairly unorganized collection of information. For years, programmers have been connecting disparate bits of information by making "mashups," websites that combine information from two or more sources, such as Google maps and Craigslist rental listings. But mashup making has remained the domain of geeks who know how to program, or at least highly motivated novices who want to learn.

A new research project from Intel Research, in Berkeley, CA, is trying to take some of the mystery out of crafting a mashup. Called Mash Maker, the project aims to let people use their ordinary Web browsers to combine information from different sites. If, for example, you are looking at apartments on Craigslist, you can easily add information about nearby restaurants from Yelp, a recommendation site, essentially augmenting the data on the Craigslist page. With another few clicks of a button, you can put the apartments and Yelp listings on a Google map, which will also appear within the Craigslist page. The next time you visit the Craigslist page, you can reopen the mashup, and it will automatically use new data from the site.

Wi-Fi Goes Long

Ordinarily, hooking a Wi-Fi router up to a directional antenna lets you send a Wi-Fi signal a few kilometers. By modifying the router's software, however, Intel has increased that distance to as much as 100 kilometers. The modified software coördinates sending and receiving antennas, assigning each of them specific time slots for talking and listening.
