Photoshop alternatives

Adobe Photoshop is an incredible program for putting people’s heads on other people’s bodies. Friends tell me it’s also useful for lots of other things, too. The problem is how much it costs. Now you could go out and pirate it from a warez site, but you’d probably end up with a nasty Trojan virus, plus you’d be a law-breaker. A safer and freer approach, if you don’t have the funds, is to download one of the many alternative free and open-source photo editors. Molly Wood shows you some free Photoshop alternatives in today’s video. Awesome alternatives to Photoshop

Reducing Windows desktop total cost of ownership

The desktop workstation is the primary productivity tool in business today. Although it’s the main metric most employees use to judge their IT departments, the Windows desktop environment is often given a low priority.

Well managed environments in Windows shops typically have very low call volumes and often have a desktop support-to-user ratio of 400 to 1 -- excluding the call center. If a system fails and the technician cannot resolve the issue in 20 to 30 minutes remotely, the system is replaced or re-imaged and up and running within the hour. Users have enough flexibility to do their jobs and customize their workspaces -- but cannot change their core workstation configuration.

The corporate reality is quite different. Most organizations go through the motions of applying best practices by implementing them superficially but then fail miserably at following through to make sure the details are implemented correctly. For example, most organizations have an OS imaging capability to rapidly re-image and deploy workstations. Ideally, enterprises should try to standardize on one or two images -- desktop and laptop.

Ribbit software could make it easier to stay in touch

Crick Waters is an easy man to get ahold of. Vice president of strategy and business development for Mountain View, CA, startup company Ribbit, Waters can make all his phones ring at once, be they landline, Internet based, or cellular. Answering one phone will make the others calm, as Ribbit’s SmartSwitch technology notifies each device that the call has been picked up. Waters plans to release Ribbit to the general public early this year, offering consumers flexible phone numbers that will work smoothly with multiple devices, and allowing developers to build features that work with all three types of phone.

“There’s nothing more powerful than actually seeing a telephone call come in that you can answer on Google Talk, you can answer on Skype, you can answer on an iPhone, or in a Web page,” he says.
