Maryland Tech Council Cheers House Passage of Computer Services Sales Tax Repeal

The Tech Council of Maryland, representing more than 500 companies and thousands of IT workers statewide, is cheering today's news that the Maryland House of Delegates has passed legislation to repeal the six percent sales tax on computer services. The measure now goes to Governor Martin O'Malley, who is expected to sign the tech tax repeal into law.

“We are elated at the news that the House has passed the repeal. We want to commend the Governor O'Malley, Senate President Miller and Speaker Busch for tackling this difficult challenge head on,” said Julie Coons, chief executive officer of the Tech Council of Maryland. “With technology jobs so vital to the state's economy, this move sends the right message that Maryland is good for business, particularly small and medium-sized growing businesses.”

Memphis nabs honor for GIS use

The City of Memphis will receive top honors for its innovative use of geographic information systems from the Environmental Systems Research Institute, the mayor's office said Monday.

The city was selected from 100,000 organizations worldwide that use GIS software. ESRI will present the Special Achievement in GIS Award at its annual International User Conference in San Diego Aug. 6.

An example of innovative use of GIS is a city Web site that offers high-resolution color aerial photography for property searches, owner information, distance to police stations and fire stations and more. The public can also locate City Council districts or municipal jurisdictions as well as locate addresses.

The technology provides visual products for printing and exporting graphics for presentation purposes.

montgomery County has high hopes for system

Geographic Information Systems, GIS for short, is a type of software that shows data using maps. In less than a month, the county government will put GIS technology online for anyone to use, and officials have high hopes for how it will change public access to information.

Take County Commissioner Phil Bane's view of the debut of GIS.“I just can’t describe how happy I am to finally see this day,” he said. “It’s actually going to be quite helpful to the public because they’ll be able to access all this information from their own homes without making the trip to Crawfordsville.”

“All this information”" includes about 20 different sets of data, from ownership of individual parcels of land in the county to voting district lines and zoning information.
