Township engineers got the green light Thursday to start updating Mount Joy's geographic information system (GIS).
GIS allows the township to view information digitally about the properties in Mount Joy, Chairman John Gormont said. William F. Hill and Associates offered to research the right-of-ways associated with properties and add the information to GIS.
Gormont said the lack of records regarding right-of-ways makes zoning and code enforcement officer Shannon Hare's job "difficult." Hare often has to go digging for information in county records, according to Gormont.
Once the township engineer enters the data into GIS, Hare will be able to quickly access the records she needs to do her job, Gormont said.
"I think it's a valuable tool," supervisor Dennis Bowman said during discussion.
Gormont suggested William F. Hill and Associates start with two roads to see how long it takes and what the cost will be and go from there.
The board approved the project to start with Patterson Road and Barlow Two Taverns Road. There are 10 properties to be researched on Patterson Road, which will cost the township approximately $500 total, Gormont said. On Barlow Two Taverns there are 64 properties, which will cost about $1,750.
Gormont said he estimated the entire GIS update could range between $15,000 and $20,000.
"I think it's money well spent," Gormont said.
