Aside from just telling you where you are, or letting you point our where you want to be, maps can do a fantastic job of recontextualizing everything you think you know about the world. You probably know that already, but here's a run-down of maps that do it well.
Vlogbrothers does a good job of spinning through some of the more clever map visualizations out there, a few of which we've seen, but even more we haven't. It's just a quick, whirlwind tour, but you can find links to all the maps in full on the YouTube page. In the meantime, sit back and let your perception of the world shift around you.

Susan Marlow, President, Smart Data Strategies (Franklin, TN), chair of the MAPPS cadastre task force, will testify before the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Committee on Financial Services.
The hearing, “Utilizing Technology to Improve TARP and Financial Oversight” will focus on how technology can be used to ensure federal agencies provide strong, coordinated oversight of financial services activity. Ms Marlow will discuss the role geospatial technology can play to provide transparency and accountability for programs, such as TARP, and be an early warning system for disruptions in the market, such as increased foreclosures. Her testimony will explain how the technology provides a method for tracking assets, such as the portfolio of mortgages the Federal government now holds, and other applications ranging from health care to climate change. She will call on Congress to amend the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) to require data collection at the parcel level.
Ms Marlow was a member of the National Research Council panel that produced the report, “National Land Parcel Data: A Vision for the Future.” She will tell Congress the challenge to creating a national cadastre or parcel system in the NSDI “is not technical, it is political and institutional” and was first identified as such in the 1980 National Academy study, “Need for a Multipurpose Cadastre.”

Recent changes to the boundaries of the Palafox Historic Business District on the city of Pensacola's geographic information systems map have sparked clashing views on the consistency of City Hall's rules for developing real estate.
At issue remains how clear city staff have been with development corporation Two Hundred Garden West Inc. on the process for redeveloping land anchored by the Escambia County School District's former headquarters at 215 W. Garden St.
The News Journal first reported Sept. 24, 2016, that the school district had approved selling the nearly 4.9-acre site to Two Hundred Garden West for $3.4 million.
The development group has yet to close on the property, but in the News Journal's initial report, local attorney and developer Jim Reeves, president of the corporation, revealed the group's intent to redevelop the site into a mixed-use apartment development.
The developers previously believed the parcels resided in the Governmental Center District, which they said influenced their plans for the project. On Dec. 21, several hours before the group would present to the Pensacola Architectural Review Board for permission to demolish all structures on the site, the city altered its GIS map, which now depicts the location as also sitting within the Palafox Historic Business District.

The Y uses a geographic lens to gain an understanding of the needs of communities, sharing programming that works for different constituents for more inclusive services.
The United States is home to more than 2,600 branches of the YMCA, serving around 20 million members, or one out of every 16 Americans. It is perhaps the only institution so universal it can be identified by a single letter.
But this ubiquity presents a challenge. Every Y serves communities with different needs. In a diverse society, it can sometimes be difficult to discern those needs let alone satisfy them.
Adding to this challenge is the Y’s federated structure. YMCA of the USA (Y-USA), the national resource office for local YMCAs, provides support for the more than 800 independent nonprofits that operate each facility. “Because we are everywhere, decisions about where to invest can be difficult,” said Maria-Alicia Serrano, Y-USA’s senior director of Research, Analytics, and Insights.
