Esri, the global leader in spatial analytics, today announced the launch of the Land Administration Modernization Program for developing countries to help them jump-start and modernize their land administration systems. Good land governance requires effective policies, processes, and institutions that can determine, record, and disseminate information about the tenure, value, and use of land. This new program allows land administration organizations in developing nations to meet these challenges and lay the foundation for economic success.
"The Esri Land Administration Modernization Program includes all the tools countries need to improve land administration business processes, create efficiencies, and improve parcel data accuracy," said Brent Jones, Esri land records/cadastre industry manager. "Esri's ArcGIS software provides a complete platform for land administration, giving nations the tools to plan work, conduct field data collection, maintain their system of record, and quickly disseminate their authoritative data."
Land is an essential factor in nearly every aspect of a country's social fabric and economic well-being. Unlike many other resources, land is in finite supply, and good land governance supports sustainable economic growth, social equity, access to services, and conflict prevention. The goal of modernizing land administration systems has been out of reach for many countries due to issues ranging from lack of technological resources to shortages in skilled personnel.
Esri's program delivers a scalable platform, allowing simple field capture, management, and publication of parcel data in the cloud, or the program can be implemented as an enterprise system that meets the needs of any modern land administration office. Cadastral agencies from over 70 countries around the globe are now able to take advantage of this donation of ArcGIS software. The program provides perpetual licenses for four years from date of order and includes maintenance updates as well as community and self-help support from Esri.

Esri, the global leader in spatial analytics, today honored three of its partners with a Federal Small Business Specialty (FSBS) Award during the Esri Federal GIS (FedGIS) Conference. The award recognizes companies that use Esri technology to help the US government run more efficiently and transparently by innovating in areas such as national security and marine exploration.
"We are proud to support and very excited about the solutions our small-business partners are delivering to help innovate in federal government organizations," said Jeff Peters, head of national government at Esri. "The FSBS Award winners are all powering the next generation of digital transformation in our institutions and helping them be more effective in their missions."
Esri president and founder Jack Dangermond awarded the following companies in three different categories:
The Esri Partner Network, which helps members expand their technology offerings and increase sales, offers exclusive access to an array of spatial analytics resources. The FSBS Award recognizes Esri partners' contributions to The Science of Where.
"This award really embodies the incredible teamwork, innovation, and dedication to our clients' missions," said Travis Hardy, principal at ArdentMC, Partner of the Year awardee. "Whether creating maps, lightweight apps, analytical products, or even 24/7 mission-critical systems for situational awareness—partnering collaboratively, creatively, and securely to leverage the power of the ArcGIS platform has enabled ArdentMC and Esri to help make our homeland more prepared, responsive, and resilient."
Awardees will present their stories on March 21 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. New Configurable Web App Allows Users to Monitor People, Services, Assets, and Events in Real Time
Esri announced that it has released a brand-new web browser application, allowing users to create reporting dashboards that use charts, gauges, maps, and other visual elements to reflect the status and performance of people, services, assets, and events in real time. Using dynamic dashboards through Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS, organizations of all types—from Emergency Operations Centers to public utilities—can view crucial activities and key performance indicators that are vital to meeting their objectives.
"The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communication [OEMC] GIS [geographic information system] team has been using Operations Dashboard to support various events with access to real-time information," said Joe Kezon, GIS manager for the Chicago OEMC. "We are looking forward to the enhancements that will further increase our ability to ensure the safety and security of the City of Chicago."
With an easily accessible web app, executives can monitor their organizations' activities to assess what is working well and what needs attention.
“The Emergency Management division of the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications works very closely with our public safety partners and the City’s infrastructure departments in our comprehensive approach to event and incident management,” said Thomas Sivak, Deputy Director, Emergency Management, Chicago OEMC. “The Operation Dashboard allows us to effectively coordinate among agencies and adjust resources to make Chicago a safe place to live, work, and play.”
Having this type of authoritative data allows decision-makers to reduce the risk of costly errors due to inaccurate or outdated information, better control the allocation of resources, maintain real-time awareness of where assets and human resources are located, monitor conditions live such as weather and traffic, and achieve real-time insight to respond to changing conditions.
"The new Operations Dashboard web app enables, at a glance, decision-making better than ever," said Jeff Shaner, Esri product manager. "Not only can dashboards be authored online—anywhere, at any time—but the common platform allows greater collaboration among personnel."
Operations Dashboard also provides a common interface to monitor progress and identify vulnerabilities that could compromise the success of an organization's mission. Now, dashboards can be authored completely in a web browser. There is no need to download and install an app anymore. Users can launch Operations Dashboard by using their ArcGIS organizational account. They can also browse and manage dashboards within their ArcGIS organizational content or on the dashboard home page.

New Utility Network Management Extension Combines Advanced System of Record with Location-Based Analytics
Esri announced that it is releasing advanced network capabilities for utilities as part of the company's ArcGIS platform. The ArcGIS Utility Network Management extension, which delivers the new utility network, lets users create, manage, and share complete data about networks from source to demand, such as residential meters for electric, water, wastewater, gas, district heating, and telecommunications companies.
These advanced capabilities will help utilities and telecoms provide greater details about their networks across their organization, at a rate of speed not seen in the past. Jeff Rashid, Esri global director for utilities and communications
These network management capabilities enhance Esri's current utility platform for handling billions of data elements while providing access to the utility network on any device, anytime, anywhere. For the first time, workers will be able to edit and trace the path of a network from a smart device while in the field and share information securely and more easily with those who need it. Previously, each utility subnetwork—like transmission lines, substations, and distribution and low-voltage networks—had its own separate GIS database.
The utility network provides a holistic system for every component of the utility supply chain right down to the customer, as well as the ability to store unprecedented detail on each of these components, which will be very important as utilities evolve to provide higher-fidelity information to operational systems.
"We are very excited about the release of our next generation utility platform," said Jeff Rashid, Esri global director for utilities and communications. "These advanced capabilities will help utilities and telecoms provide greater details about their networks across their organization, at a rate of speed not seen in the past.
The ArcGIS Utility Network Management extension allows the utility network to be completely cross-platform capable, meaning it is not confined to users of desktop GIS software. Prior to this innovation, location data was not easily accessible for fieldworkers or executives, managers, service technicians, and accountants who needed to have accurate, real-time understanding of utility assets.

The Facebook journalism project that was sparked by interference in the U.S. election could soon bring another feature to the social network. The Facebook local news section, dubbed “Today In,” is currently being tested in six cities. The section lists local news from publishers that have been vetted by Facebook in an attempt to weed out fake news.
According to Recode, the new section houses events, announcements, and emergency alerts as well as local news. The section is tailored to each user’s current hometown, so long as the geographic information was provided in the profile information. Currently, the feature is just a test and only accessible to users living in a handful of U.S. cities, including Olympia, Washington; Binghamton, New York; Peoria, Illinois; Billings, Montana; Little Rock, Arkansas; and New Orleans.
Exactly what content appears in that Today In section is determined partially by artificial intelligence algorithms. For news, however, publishers will need to be approved before articles pop up in the section. Facebook’s News Partnerships Team is heading up the process of approving news organizations to appear in the section.
