2010 ASPRS FELLOW AWARD WINNERS

www.asprs.org

George F. Hepner, Marguerite Madden, J. Chris McGlone, and Clifford J. Mugnier have been named the 2010 ASPRS Fellow Award winners. The ASPRS designation of Fellow is conferred on active Society members who have performed excep¬tional service in advancing the science and use of the mapping sciences (photogrammetry, remote sensing, surveying, geographic information systems, and related disciplines). The designation of Fellow is awarded for pro¬fessional excellence and for service to the Society. Candidates are nominated by other active members, recommended to the Fellows Committee, and elected by the ASPRS Board of Directors. Up to 0.3 percent of the Society's active members may be elected as Fellows in any one year. The nominees must have made outstanding contributions in a recognized Society specialization whether in practice, research, development, administration, or education in the mapping sciences. Members of the Fellows Committee and the Executive Committee are ineligible for nomination. This year’s awards will be given in April at the ASPRS 2010 Annual Conference in San Diego, California.

2010 Winter Olympics Chief Information Officer to Keynote GITA 2010 Solutions Conference

www.gita.org/gis

The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced that Ward Chapin, chief information officer of the Vancouver Organizing Committee of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, will deliver the keynote address at GITA’s 2010 Geospatial Infrastructure Solutions Conference, slated for April 25-29, 2010, in Phoenix, Ariz. This will be a joint keynote address with the American Congress and Surveying and Mapping and Arizona Professional Land Surveyors’ Annual Conference, which is co-located with GITA’s Solutions Conference in 2010.

“We are very excited to have Ward Chapin as our keynote speaker,” said 2010 Solutions Conference Chair Ralph Anhold, ESRI. “His support of the geospatial community indicates that our technology is a fundamental element of the information systems of NOW and the future, which ties in nicely with our theme - not your father’s GIS conference!”

3 States Launch Interactive Maps with BroadbandStat
Illinois, Ohio, and Tennessee Put State Broadband Service Maps Online with ESRI’s BroadbandStat

www.esri.com

Illinois, Ohio, and Tennessee residents and businesses can now simply type in an address to find out which companies provide broadband service in their area. All three states have posted online maps that allow Web site visitors to use BroadbandStat, an application based on ESRI geographic information system technology, to enter any address in the state and retrieve a list of Internet providers that serve that location. Visitors to the Connect Ohio, Connect Illinois, or Connected Tennessee Web sites can also create maps of where cable, mobile, or DSL broadband is available; show statewide results by Census Block; and zoom in on results all the way to the street address level. Information on each state’s demographic data, broadband and Internet adoption rates, and computer ownership rates (when available) can also be mapped.

“Now, business and industry can use this tool for relocation decisions, home buyers can use this while shopping for a home, and government and ECD [Department of Economic and Community Development] can use it for planning purposes,” said Daryl Phillips, executive director of the Hickman County, Tennessee, ECD.

BroadbandStat was developed by ESRI in conjunction with Connected Nation, a nonprofit corporation and leader in promoting broadband expansion. The application gives states the ability to map information they have gathered from a variety of sources and provide a visual way of exploring the results. For example, the data used to create the Ohio BroadbandStat map is based on information gathered from more than 70 Ohio broadband providers and Connect Ohio’s 2008 Residential Technology Assessment.

“The assembly of data from major providers is key to a comprehensive portrait of statewide coverage,” said Morton O’Kelly, chair of the Department of Geography at Ohio State University. “As a geographer, I am immediately able to see significant regional contrasts, as well as gain a greater appreciation for the challenges facing providers as they attempt to complete coverage in lower-density rural areas.”

Aerial Cartographics of America (ACA) to Perform Florida Runway Expansion Mapping

www.aca-net.com

Aerial Cartographics of America (ACA) will perform mapping in support of a major runway expansion project at the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida. ACA will provide all digital mapping products required to complete expansion of Runway 9R/27L at the airport.

ACA will provide new airport mapping products including color ortho-imagery, an updated Airport Layout Plan (ALP) & Obstruction Survey, and planimetric updates for the airport and surrounding areas. In addition, ACA will perform low-altitude helicopter LAMP mapping of critical road connectors and an overall FAA-GIS Standards data conversion.

These products will be used in support of expansion of the 8,000-foot air carrier runway on the south side of the airport, as well as modifications to roads and bridges in the area. The complex airport project will span an active federal highway and railroad. A runway tunnel and taxiway bridge will require large amounts of fill.

ACA, a pioneer of advanced mapping solutions for over 36 years has successfully completed aviation mapping projects meeting FAA Advisory Circulars 16A surveying, 17B imagery acquisition, and 18B GIS Data Collection Standards for a majority of the airports in Florida.

The advanced photogrammetric approaches include fixed wing imagery acquisition with ACA’s UCX Large Format Digital Mapping Camera and Low Altitude Mapping Photography (LAMP) imagery acquisition by helicopter. These products provide survey grade mapping accuracies on runways, tarmacs, roads and developed areas keeping engineers and surveyors out of harm’s way in busy airport environments.
