Seattle Public Utilities (SPU)implemented a Mobile Resource Management (MRM) solution from CompassCom Software Corp. to manage its maintenance, emergency services and command vehicles. The automatic vehicle location (AVL) system is being used to improve service to SPU customers by reducing response time to utility service calls.
CompassCom Software made the announcement today from the ESRI International User Conference in San Diego where it is exhibiting in booth 1804.
CompassCom’s CompassLDE is a universal mobile resource management server that receives wireless GPS-based location and status information from vehicles in multiple fleets over different communications networks simultaneously. Compatible with CompassTrac and ESRI-based GIS software, CompassLDE serves location-based data in real time via the Internet or intranet for display on computer-aided dispatch, mobile data terminals or third party software.
SPU, which manages Seattle’s water, waste water, and solid waste disposal services, selected the CompassLDE GPS based tracking solution due to the system’s open architecture. This enabled SPU to integrate the AVL server with an existing Maximo ticket assignment and asset management system. With an Oracle database on the back end, SPU developed a Field Operations Mapping System to serve as the interface between Maximo and the CompassLDE MRM server.

Siemens Energy successfully completed the installation of its Spectrum Power 3 SCADA/EMS system for Arizona Public Service (APS), Arizona’s largest and longest-serving electric utility. This project is unique in that it established a partnership whereby APS co-developed certain required functionality with Siemens. The new system was commissioned in November 2008.
By engaging in a true partnership with Siemens, APS implemented an overall SCADA/EMS technology refresh which provides existing functionality as well as introduced the benefits of advanced transmission network applications and an operator training simulator.
“We’re very proud of the relationship we’ve been able to establish with APS,” notes Mike Edmonds, vice president of Siemens Energy’s U.S. Energy Automation Business Unit. “This project was a perfect example of a successful partnership approach, and thus we are especially pleased with the EMS installation that enables APS to manage their electrical system in real-time to their customers.”
“APS had three primary objectives when beginning this SCADA/EMS project,” said Tom Glock, APS Director of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “The first was to become a member of a large user and support EMS organization. The second was to obtain state estimation and contingency analysis functionality. And, lastly, we wanted to provide our transmission operations staff with a training simulator. APS has successfully met all three objectives.”
The latest generation of the Spectrum Power 3 SCADA/EMS includes data acquisition and control, a historical information system, energy accounting, power applications, ICCP, transmission network applications and an operator training simulator.

This unique series of four 2-day conferences is designed to change the way we think and learn about the re-purposing of the power grid and what the future holds as the Smart Grid evolves. Rather than having to travel long distances, navigate throngs of attendees and struggle to balance myriad presentations with hundreds of exhibits, SGRS conferences offer a far more intimate environment, a highly focused program and dedicated time for visiting exhibits where meaningful dialog can be conducted and solutions can be found.
