Case Study: GIS Data Migration Project

submitted by

Quantum Infotech, Inc.

Editor’s Note: This is a case study provided by a GIS supplier, Quantum Infotech, Inc.. While any case study written by an suppier is bound to be the all went well-version, I think we can all find a good deal of insight by paying attention to the approach and techniques. Vendor-phobia is found throughout the IT industry and GIS is no exception. I find this rather curious, considering that without the GIS vendors, the technology may not exist. So, now that you understand the source, learn what you can from Quantum’s case study.

Challenge: A critical data migration project for converting all DWG database to ESRI .Shp format without losing data integrity for a major oil and gas application project. The challenge was to convert thousands of files with critical GIS information to ESRI shape file within the time lines defined by Quantum client.

Solution: Quantum approach to this challenge used an ESRI technology with customization done on top of ESRI ArcGIS 9.0. The major task in this project was to deal with different type of data sets and their nomenclature that was critical to an oil and Gas application. There were several AutoCAD files and database related to these files.

The Quantum team made a study on various data types and fields related to five different applications maintained by the client for Oil and Gas applications. Quantum then redefined these attributes and structured a database format which was integrated with ESRI technology.

Each of the drawing file was then imported into Shp such that data integrity still holds good without any loss of database.

Workflow: Integration and Migration of Files from DWG to ESRI .SHP

DWG to SHP Workflow

Result: The end effect for Quantum client was a streamlined process that effectively reduced the complexity of the process in handling large oil and gas data. This migration and integration to ESRI platform improved the productivity of the client by 60% and cost savings improved from 15% savings to 65% savings. Today, this client maintains accurate data in ESRI Shape file which is now selected as a standard format by Quantum client and delivered to oil and gas vendors throughout the world. The optimization of this project was well appreciated by Quantum client and was delivered within the strict quality process and time guidelines.
