W's For GIS

White Paper: AM/FM vs GIS: Which Is Right for You?

This is a white paper created by Byers Engineering Company. AM/FM is a subset of GIS that differs from other GIS applications. Rather than storing specific features and polygons as topological features as is common in some GIS databases, an AM/FM builds a linear network model that uses database intelligence to analyze and run applications across linear features such as pipes or cables. This includes traces and load analysis. This network, or graph theory, approach provides much better performance than can be achieved through a topological model, and provides a more logical and simpler way to build and maintain linear type features. ZIP Code Look Up from USPS

Here is a handy web site provided by the US Post Office. Great for finding ZIPS and ZIP+4, and even a list of all cities within a particular ZIP Code. For example, here at 35244, we co-zip with Birmingham, Hoover, Bluff Park and Inverness. All can use their actual names, or use Birmingham as the default. Although we use Birmingham in our address, for example, we are located in the city of Hoover, Alabama.
